Dr. Brian Harke

Dr. Brian Harke is a leader in education who draws on extensive experience from his work in both the corporate and academic sectors.  He is recognized by leaders in both sectors and the press as an expert in the area of organizational development and leadership.  Harke is passionate about the personal and professional development of college students. He is an expert contributor to the Huffington Post and is regularly called upon by the media to provide insight about programs related to college success. 

 

HIGHER EDUCATION EXPERIENCE                                                                   

 

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA,Los Angeles, CA                                                Dean of Students, School of Cinematic Arts (1600 students), 2008­–May 2019   

   

Oversee all day-to-day and long-term initiatives and activities relating to student affairs, admissions, student programs and other school wide initiatives. Supervise multiple divisions and associated staff members.

  • Created, built and funded a new school wide division called Student Services. The divisions included recruitment, admissions, advising, scholarships, orientations, retention, judicial affairs, and student affairs.

  • Developed and implemented new school wide policies and procedures relating to student service, student academic success, cross program integration, scholarship/Development programs, mentoring program, internships, and professional development tools.

  • Restructured and instituted new Student Affairs, Scholarship, and Admissions departments and programs.

  •  Created a national recruitment strategy, including videos, website, print material       and marketing programs. 

  • Built a scholarship program that awards and tracks more than $4.5M to undergrad and graduate students.

  • Led the introduction of several new academic and co-curricular programs and associated curriculum.

  • Introduced new student success initiatives and programs including, new student orientations, first year seminar class, peer-to-peer mentoring, internship seminars, professional mentoring program, student organizations, student government, and family relations program.

  • My efforts produced results that included a 110% increase in student applications, a 98% retention rate, a 94 % four year graduation rate, 380% increase in minority student applications, and unprecedented levels of engagement and sense of community.

 

UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCO                                                                                    Assistant Dean, Graduate School of Business and Management, 2007­–2008   

        

Responsible for the management of all student affairs and the operation of five graduate programs.      

  • Led the turnaround and restructure of Student Services, Career Services, and Admissions departments.

  • Championed the introduction of two new MBA programs and associated curriculum.

  • Formed new partnerships with Academics, other college departments, and external resources. This introduced new opportunities when building co-curricular programs and learning initiatives for students.

  • Supervised new, national, and international recruitment strategies, which included dramatically new print materials and marketing programs. These efforts resulted in increased applications and enrollments.

  • Streamlined the graduate program’s budget system and successfully negotiated with senior management to fund all new initiatives.

  • Developed and implemented a multi-departmental plan that introduced new transition tools and learning opportunities for students.The plan included a four-day new student orientation, personal and professional development seminars and workshops, and weekly learning and community building activities.

  • My efforts produced results that included a 20% increase in student enrollment, and 100% retention rate.

 

CALIFORNIA CULINARY ACADEMY (CCA), San Francisco, CA                                                 

Dean of Student Services, 2005–2007

Responsible for all student services relating to the personal, professional, and academic growth of a diverse student population. CCA is a full-time residential college with a student population of approximately 1,800 students. Developed, implemented and managed a new Student Affairs/Student Services department. Identified the need within the college and garnered support and funding from senior management.

  • Launched the first Student Leadership and New Student Orientation Programs in the 30-year history of CCA. These programs helped students became more confident and gain new skills to succeed personally and professionally.

  • Generated proactive student advising and retention initiatives to increase student persistence. Worked cross-departmentally to implement plans that produced a 56% increase in student retention.

  • Worked with multiple departments and student groups to produce co-curricular activities that contributed to an increase in student satisfaction and sense of community.

  • Supervised and led Student Services, Advising, Judicial Affairs, Resident Life, and Retention Efforts.

  • Managed a staff of five full-time employees, four student workers, and 11 Resident Advisors.

Launched a new online division of LVMH.

  • Built and managed a marketing department that launched a new online division for LVHM-Moet-Hennessey Louis Vuitton. Designed department’s organizational model; hired and managed the staff, advertising agencies, and PR firms. Managed the $27M budget used by department to produce efforts resulting in 125% of forecasted revenue plan.

Conceptualized and launched a new business.
